[Playwin] Businessman hits back

[Rinzin Wangchuk, dz_editor@kuensel.com.bt 09 Oct 07]

The former PlayWin online lottery operator and owner of All Star Entertainment, Sangay Dorji, said that he is ready to face the charges by the government and present his rationalization in court.

“This lawsuit will hopefully lead to the adjudication of the already publicized “lottery case”, where irrational taxation policies led to a swift closure of PlayWin in Bhutan,” Sangay Dorji told Kuensel.

He said that all appeals to wind up his business in a dignified manner within a decent period of time were ignored. “I have been victimised and denied justice,” Sangay Dorji said.

“I was given two days in which to wrap up my business, that was painstakingly researched, established and functional, not to mention the heavy monetary losses that I had to incur,” he said.

Sangay Dorji filed the case against the concerned authorities earlier, saying that his appeal to reduce the tax amount charged on his business and the request for more time to wind up did not receive a response from the government.

Sangay Dorji earlier told Kuensel that it was unfair that the department of revenue and customs levied such high tax on the online lottery business at such short notice - two days - without even consulting him, which led to the closure of his business overnight.

The Office of the Attorney General had filed a case against Sangay Dorji on three charges including defamation and false information in the Thimphu district court on October 4.

[Tamil Nadu] MP backs lottery business

[Newindpress / ENS, Chennai 08 Oct 07]

The lottery business is a good one and not bad, as many people here think, Rajya Sabha MP Girishkumar Sanghi has said.

Speaking after installing the new office-bearers of Rajasthani Association of Tamil Nadu for the period of 2007-08 in the city on Sunday, Sanghi said, ''It is just another business and one of the few businesses wherein almost 95 per cent of the pooled amount is returned to the investors (buyers of lottery).''

Lauding the Rajasthani community for being the main force in the overall economic development of the country, he said, ''wherever these (Rajasthani) people settle, whether it is in North or South India, with their hard work they maintain high class entrepreneurship and change the economic graph of the land towards sustained prosperity''. Sudeep Jain, Joint Secretary for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, said, ''Though Rajasthanis have made good progress in the society and maintained their rich culture, the issue of denying equal rights to women still exists.

Although we look at Western culture as a bad influence, women in there have equal rights in deciding their future without any hindrance from their family members, and that kind of freedom should be given here too'', Jain added.

The following members were elected for the period of 2007-08: N Sugalchand Jain as president, P D Maheswari as presidentelect, Hari Shankar Agarwal, Gyanchand Bohara and Vijai Kumar Bafna as vice-presidents, Kantilal D Shah as general secretary, Nitin Sogani and Padamchand Chhajer as joint secretaries.

Besides, Gouthamchand Bohara (Beawar Association), Madan Surana (Sanskriti), Prakash Lalwani (Bilara Association), SK Todi(Agarwal Samaj) and Haridas Sarda (Maheswari Sabha) were nominated to the Rajasthani Association from its affiliated associations. Director General of Police (MTC) SP Mathur and industrialist Balkishan Goenka were among those who attended the installation ceremony.
